Instructor Amber Lawton and her healthcare students traveled to Iowa Central on Tuesday, March 7th, for a tour and some hands-on learning. Amber and her students spent the morning with the healthcare students from the North Central Career Academy in Eagle Grove.
Students toured the Medical Lab Tech Building and the Science Building on campus and then moved to the SynDaver lab where they got to experience real-world learning. They drew blood, looked at the muscle structures and bones, and examined different parts of the bodies.
They then traveled to Unity Point Hospital for a tour and hands-on demos with manikins and ultrasound simulations in their SynLab. They experienced putting one of the students on a cart and getting into the back of an ambulance. They experienced "patients" having babies.
They learned how to do a bacteria culture by testing their own cellphones. They will know the results on Friday.
They were then treated to a sack lunch provided by Iowa Central and our Greene County Career Academy students ate with the students from the North Central Career Academy.
This was a great experience for our students, and they had so many good things to say about everything they did and observed.
